Lauryn Bosstick on How to Be a Social Media Boss
It’s safe to say Lauryn Evarts Bosstick is blogger royalty. Before establishing a massive social media following and building her brand, Bosstick graduated in San Diego with a degree in TV Broadcasting as well as a nutrition certification. That passion for wellness inspired her to establish The Skinny Confidential, a fitness blog that has transformed into a full-on lifestyle website, covering camel toes, surgery, home decor, meal plans, and everything in between. The goal of her brand is “to connect with women from around the world & showcase major realness,” no filter needed. Since launching The Skinny Confidential in 2011, Bosstick’s brand has evolved into a book, fitness and nutrition eBook, podcast, YouTube channel, and app. Her website has been featured in SHAPE, Women’s Health Magazine, The Huffington Post, SELF Magazine, and Who What Wear. Additionally, the blogger has partnered with a myriad of today’s leading brands including Reebok, Roberto Cavalli, Elizabeth Arden, and Victoria’s Secret. Now she’s ready to exclusively reveal how she grew her platform and the steps to following in her footsteps.
When did you come up with the idea to launch The Skinny Confidential?
The Skinny Confidential began in 2011 while I was in college. I was rushing to a sorority, and after they told me the ridiculous price, I decided it was time to create my own community. I wanted to establish a place where women from all over the world could share their tips and tricks.
What’s the main message you’re trying to get across through your blog?
The community is built to help women live their best lives. TSC provides tools and habits that help others love who they are and build the lives of their dreams.
How does your blog differ from other blogs?
My blog is different in that I'm not scared to go there—we talk about real **** and taboo topics. It ranges from discussions about skincare to ones about depression.
How did you grow your social media following?
Consistency. I've spent the past eight years building The Skinny Confidential. That meant posting content daily and connecting with my audience. I interact with the community through a secret Facebook group and really care about what's going on in their lives.
What’s your secret to making your Instagram feed look cohesive?
It's so important to maintain a cohesive feed. I wrote a whole post with tips here.
What advice do you have for influencers who want to grow their social media following?
Stop looking at the numbers. It's about quality vs. quantity of your audience. Show up and provide value.
How did you go about obtaining partnerships with major brands such as Victoria’s Secret and Benefit Cosmetics?
It's important to remain authentic to who you are and speak about items and brands that you truly use and love. You have to put yourself out there and reach out. There are far more no’s than yes’s.
Why did you decide to expand your brand and launch a podcast with your husband?
Michael and I were in Cabo and decided it would be a fun platform to create and provide value together.
How does your podcast differ from your website?
The podcast is an extension of my blog. We invite top performers in a wide variety of topics onto the podcast to share their knowledge and wisdom with the community. In the past, we’ve featured Jillian Michaels, Dr. Dennis Gross, Aubrey Marcus, and many others. We get to have a conversation and really dive deep into certain topics.
How would you describe your personal style?
Always evolving. Style is fun. It's important to play around, try new things, and remain youthful. Focus on what flatters your body rather than wearing every trend.
What is one style staple piece you can’t live without and why?
Giant sunglasses. They complete any look and also protect you from the sun!
What are your future plans?
To keep building the podcast.
This or That:
Heels or sneakers? Sneakers.
Dancing or boxing? Dancing.
Sequins or fringe? Fringe.
Lipstick or lip gloss? Lipstick.
Braids or ponytail? Braids.
