Jenna Raine On Finding Her Sound

Texas-native Jenna Raine has been working on strengthening her singing skills ever since her first stage performance at a third-grade talent show. Several years later, due to a recommendation from a family friend tied to Demi Lovato, she began taking lessons at the renowned Septien Entertainment Group, a Dallas-based training facility for musicians. Shortly after, Raine made a name for herself in the entertainment industry by joining girl group L2M who sang the theme song for the animated movie Lego Friends: Girlz 4 Life. Next, Raine received a starring role in the YouTube Red series Hyperlinked, and she was given the opportunity to showcase her talent in the music videos at the end of each episode. As the teen continued to train her craft (she took vocal lessons with Eric Vetro, coach to Ariana Grande and Katy Perry), she began to write songs of her own and learned to play the guitar and ukulele. Now 15 years old, Raine has an EP of her own titled Nen--featuring thoughtful lyrics and an upbeat sound inspired by the gospel singers she listened to growing up--and has toured Europe with British music duo Max & Harvey. Get to know Raine as she takes readers along on her vocal journey.

When did you first get into singing?

I was always singing around the house and in the shower, but the first time I took it on stage was during my third-grade talent show!

Who are some of your favorite singers and why?

Ed Sheeran is one of my favorites because he is such an amazing songwriter. He really inspires me to improve as an artist I also love Kari Jobe because I’ve been listening to her since I was little, and she was definitely someone who inspired me to sing.

How would you describe the style of your original music?

Pop and acoustic.

Describe the process of producing one of your songs from start to finish.

The process of producing and writing a song depends on who I’m working with. Everyone has their own process, but mine starts with a melody. Once I find a melody and the chords, I figure out the melodies for the rest of the song. After that, I write all of the lyrics and the producer and other writers will all help to finish it off.

What is your favorite song you’ve released to date?

Every time someone asks me this question, I always change my answer! Right now my favorite is “Us.”

Who/what inspired your latest single, “A Letter to Me?”

I was in the studio with Candice Pillay and Edgar Vargez, and as we were talking about ideas, we landed on writing a song as a letter to myself.

How does it differ from previous songs you’ve released?

It’s very upbeat! I love all of my songs, and I think they all sound very unique in their own way.

How did you come up with the concept for the “A Letter to Me” music video?

I worked on the concept with Nayip Ramos, the director. He literally presented me with this amazing idea, and I absolutely loved it, so we went with it!

What has the response been like from fans about the song?

It has been outstanding! All of the fans have been so loving and supportive. I see videos of them singing and making their own covers to my music, and it’s so surreal.

What can people expect from you in the future?

More original music, performances, and hopefully tours!

This or That:

Lady Gaga or Billie Eilish? That’s so hard! I have to go with Lady Gaga, though.

Pop or rap music? Pop, all the way!

Girl band or boy band? Boy band, for sure.

Live performance or pre-recorded? Live, live, live!

Original music or covers? Originals!
