CENTRESTAGE Spotlights Asian Fashion in Its First-Ever Virtual Format
This season’s virtual Fashion Week was anything but conventional, yet amid the chaos, a particular mission transcended the screen: to cure months of quarantine wanderlust. Hong Kong Trade Development Council’s CENTRESTAGE presented an online style showcase entitled “A World of Phygital,” where physical and digital fashion united. The event featured six virtual runway shows, which displayed the latest collections from over 40 Hong Kong and Asian designers. A series of interactive content was incorporated as well, including conceptual fashion shoots, videos, designer interviews, profiles and more.
Among the labels that showed was Bette Haute Couture, known for its skillful craftsmanship and sustainable mission (the designs are made with natural fibers in eco-friendly fabrics). Her latest line captures the essence of a modern working woman, marked by an overhaul of striped blazers and bell bottoms. Patchwork fabrics add an edge to each garment, including a striking blend of plaid and pinstripe in similar color families.
METHODOLOGY is inspired by designer Glori Tsui’s background in illustration, featuring elements of fine art paintings and experimentation of material, shape and form. Most of the designs are transformable and multi-functional, leaving it up to the consumer as to how the pieces should be worn. An all-blue ensemble is most notable in the new line: the look features a criss-cross, transparent blouse, complemented by a denim skirt with a ruffle hem. A slew of top-handle bags was also shown, produced in hot pink, camel, colored stripes and more.
YEUNG CHIN breaks boundaries through a unique emphasis on performance, film and sculpture. His latest pieces contain gothic undertones: monochromatic hues are accompanied by fishnet tights and platform sandals, while a lightweight ruby duster adds a touch of romanticism. A tinsel mini dress hits a different note, although the look’s thick leather belt maintains a sense of cohesion with the rest of the collection.
Kevin Ho showcased several structured pieces, each possessing an effortless, feminine air. The designer also adopted the art of the collage, melding monochromatic and bright hues in playful frocks. The line’s standout item is a padded-shoulder jacket, paired with a lightweight midi skirt and several rocker-chic belts.
There was no need to fly to Hong Kong to appreciate the city’s iconic fashion—the “World of Phygital” transported Asian culture straight to the comfort of one’s own home.
