“BeautyChickee” On Entrepreneurship and Internet Fame
Known for her quirky sense of humor, spot-on beauty tips and authentic voice, Christina Marie Harris (aka “BeautyChickee”) is the ultimate, well-rounded YouTube creator. Her original comedic content and fashion/beauty videos set her apart, hence why she has acquired a loyal fanbase of over 681K+ subscribers. The 21-year-old is an entrepreneur as well: Harris has her own skincare line, TEENA by BeautyChickee, which she balances while attending college in NYC. Below, she provides a glimpse at why she’s so passionate about her career and provides her top tips on building a social platform.
What inspired you to start BeautyChickee?
I would watch other YouTubers’ videos, and I looked up to them. Michelle Phan was my main inspiration that made me want to start my channel. I was obsessed with her content, so one day, I decided to try making videos of my own. I filmed from my laptop webcam and instantly loved it!
What message are you trying to spread through your YouTube platform?
I try to spread a bunch of positive messages through my platform, but I especially encourage my followers to be themselves and be total girl bosses! Girls can do anything, and if you put your mind to your work, you’ll thrive!
What is your favorite video you’ve produced to date and why?
Definitely a travel documentary video I made called “what happens in LA, stays in LA.” I flew my best friends and parents out to Los Angeles for a few days when I launched my skincare line, so I decided to make a travel documentary out of the clips I filmed. The whole video was just so much fun to film and edit, and it always makes me smile when I rewatch it.
What is your favorite part about being a YouTuber? What’s the most challenging part?
My favorite part about being a YouTuber is the experiences I‘ve had, including all the travel and meeting new people, especially the fans. The most challenging part is remembering to stay consistent with my content and always having to come up with new ideas. It gets pretty frustrating sometimes when I’m experiencing a “creator’s block!”
What advice do you have for people who want to grow their following on YouTube?
Stay consistent. YouTube and Instagram are based on algorithms, so if you stay consistent, you can benefit a lot from the algorithm. Also, don’t force content! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to force a video out and it just ends up being terrible, so only create content when you’re in a good headspace to do so.
Why did you decide to launch your skincare line, TEENA by BeautyChickee?
The majority of my fans are in that stage of their lives where they have crazy teenage skin: oily, acne-prone and unpredictable. I wanted to create a product that would help them balance those concerns and make them feel more confident in their skin. Skin care is something I feel extremely passionate about, so creating products was the perfect fit for me.
How does it differ from other skincare brands on the market?
It‘s formulated to help teenage skin, as opposed to a typical skincare product that may not be specifically for teenagers or a specific skin type. The cleanser [from my brand] is packed with a bunch of great ingredients to help soothe skin and control breakouts including salicylic acid, aloe vera juice and more! It’s also vegan, cruelty free and natural.
What is your endgame? What do you ultimately hope to accomplish in the future?
I hope to continue putting out wonderful content for my fans, and I also would love to start my own management company to help other up-and-coming influencers. Being in the influencer space, I’ve learned a lot about how to properly market and grow someone, and I would love to use my knowledge to help other influencers. In the end, I’m just here to make people happy and have a laugh!
