Ruby Jay Seizes The Day!
Thirteen-year-old Ruby Jay has sung her way to success, with a current social media following of over 475,000 people on Instagram. But before breaking through in the pop music industry, Jay began her career in theater at age five, amassing credits in popular series such as Grey’s Anatomy and Modern Family. She also lent her voice to a cartoon character in Disney’s Animation series, Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure, as well as Fancy Nancy. Currently, Jay posts song covers for her 54,000 subscribers on YouTube, her videos obtaining over 3.2 million views so far. She recently released a new single titled “Cherry Pop,” further solidifying her status as a strong pop vocalist. Additionally, Jay will continue to embrace her passion for acting by playing the title role in Hulu series Holly Hobbie, about an ambitious tween singer-songwriter that dreams of saving the world. In reality, Jay is exactly the same: a positive role model for young girls, eager to spread kindness and confidence wherever she goes.
Which was your first love: acting or singing?
Well, my first love was actually musical theater! I did a lot of both acting and singing on a daily basis when I was a little girl.
Who are some singers that inspire you and why?
Hailee Steinfeld because of the way she can balance acting and singing, Ariana Grande because of her angelic voice, Beyonce (for obvious reasons), and of course, my favorite, Todrick Hall. Todrick is such an amazing storyteller with his songs.
Do you prefer singing covers or original songs?
I love doing a mixture of both, but my original song, “Cherry Pop” just came out! Make sure to check it out!
How did you build your YouTube and Instagram following? Which came first?
My Instagram came first. One of my 30-second song covers went viral and it felt like my Instagram grew overnight! Funny thing is, I got all the words wrong, but I was having fun. I think people liked that. My YouTube followed.
You’ve also had some exciting acting adventures over the past few years. What was it like playing the role of Emma on Modern Family?
The cast of Modern Family was so amazing and welcoming! I happened to be friends with one of the other girls cast, so we had fun together. I had a blast on that set.

How did playing Emma on Modern Family differ from playing Winnie on Grey’s Anatomy?
First off, only one of those characters is still alive. So, I would say that’s the biggest difference! Also, the feel of those two shows is different. Modern Family is more upbeat and funny, whereas Grey's Anatomy is more dramatic and intense.

What has been the most exciting moment of your career so far?
I would say the most exciting moment in my career so far is getting to play Holly Hobbie on the new Hulu original series, Holly Hobbie! Make sure to tune in!
What do you hope to accomplish in the future?
Honestly, I just want to be successful in the business and have fun with my acting. I would also love to be on Broadway one day, and while I am throwing out my dreams, let’s include becoming an E.G.O.T. winner!
What advice do you have for teens who want to pursue a career in music but are too afraid to get their voice heard?
Just keep going! Or, if you haven't even started, just start! Any art is an ever-growing process—you just have to keep going. Make sure you are having fun in the process and remember that music is not only about singing! There is music composition, songwriting, and so much more. Don't let your fear of singing stop you from growing in your love of music.
