Fail-Free Halloween Makeup How-To’s
Already perfected the monster mash? Here’s what’s next on your Halloween to-do list: perfecting your makeup look for the festivities! Don’t fear if you’re a novice (spiders and skeletons are surely scarier)—the following tutorials from professional makeup artists are easy enough to follow and execute. Behold your spookiest selfie yet...
Skeleton
Solidify ultimate spooky status when you enter the room with this look. As told by NYC-based celebrity makeup artist Danielle Parkes:
Start by applying primer and moisturizer to your face. This will create a smooth surface and set your makeup to last for the whole day.
Apply a thin layer of foundation (i.e. IT Cosmetics CC Cream) with a beauty blender.
Bronze your forehead, nose, under your eyes, and the sides of your chin. This will define those areas of your face and add detail to the makeup look.
Take an eyebrow pencil (i.e. Benefit Cosmetics Goof Proof Brow Pencil in 4.5) and heavily fill in your brows. This step is optional but adds emphasis to the makeup.
Taking any white eyeliner, start drawing the skeleton outline on your face. Start by outlining your cheekbone and carry that line down towards your mouth. Next, draw a line across your mouth horizontally and single lines vertically down the horizontal line. It’s okay to be messy because the lines are drawn over later on.
Once the outline is complete, taking any black eyeshadow, start to fill in and re-outline the desired areas. Using a thin brush will allow you to draw more precise lines.
Apply a pair of false lashes to complete the look (i.e. Lilly Lashes Miami 3D Mink Lashes).
Superwoman
Channel the power within as you take on a superwoman persona. As told by Danielle Parkes:
Start by priming and moisturizing your face.
Apply a layer of foundation with a beauty blender and press into the creases of your complexion.
Place concealer in the darker areas of your face to brighten them and cover any blemishes.
Apply a layer of gold shadow (i.e. the shade “Wig” from Morphe The James Charles Palette) to your eyelids.
Draw across your upper lash line with black eyeliner.
Using white eyeliner (i.e. NYX White Slide On Pencil), fill in your waterline and the small area in the inner corner of your eyes.
Apply bronzer to cheeks to enhance cheekbones and give your face more definition. Then, with a small brush, add some bronzer to your bottom lash line as well.
With white eyeliner, draw a star on the center of your forehead.
Swipe red lipstick (i.e. NYX Liquid Suede Lip Kit in the shade “Kitten Heels”) on your pout.
Use the black liner to sketch the bottom of your cheekbones and the contours of your nose and eyebrows. On the forehead, draw a thick “V” shape that stretches from the far left to the far right center of the forehead.
With the same gold shadow used for your eyelids, fill in the top area above the “V.”
With a red eyeshadow (i.e. the shade “You’re Kidding” from Morphe The James Charles Palette), fill in the star on the center of your forehead.
Using white liner, draw small lines on the tip of your nose, top and bottom of your lip, above the black line on your cheekbones, and beneath the black line on your chin to add more definition and establish a cartoon-esque look.
Scarecrow
Step inside the world of The Wizard of Oz with a look that even the Wicked Witch of the West would envy. As told by makeup artist and beauty influencer Ranvier Villamil:
Start by prepping your skin with moisturizer and primer.
Apply foundation and concealer to even out your skin tone. Set face with setting powder (i.e. ULTA Mineral Setting Powder) when done.
Generously apply bronzer and contour onto your face to achieve a dark, sunken look.
To get the iconic scarecrow flesh, apply a significant amount of blush on the apples of your cheeks as well as the tip of your nose.
Apply warm-toned eyeshadows onto the eyes (i.e. shades from the Morphe 3502 Second Nature Artistry Palette). You can further bring the scarecrow look to life with a pop of gold, shimmery shadow.
To achieve a bolder/scarier eye look, line your lash line with eyeliner. You can also add waterproof liner to your waterline to make the eyes appear fuller.
Coat mascara onto your lashes, or apply false lashes if you wish.
Apply a nude lipstick of your choice (i.e. BECCA Ultimate Lipstick Love in Bare).
To create the stitches, all you need is a liquid eyeliner pen. Start applying from the corner of your lips and end the line vertically in line with the outer corner of your eye. Then draw little dashes on your line to add the stitch effect.
Repeat step nine on the other side of your mouth, as well as on your forehead and cheeks.
Set your face with setting spray.
Clown
Feeling extra brave this Halloween? Take on the persona of the quintessential, downright creepy, comic performer. As told by Toronto-based makeup artist Noa Cohen:
As a base, cover your face in white makeup (i.e. Morphe Fluidity Full-Coverage Concealer in the shade shade C0.00). Then, set your base with a white or translucent powder to make sure it lasts all night.
Fill in your eyebrows the same way you normally do them, then carve them out and prime your eyelid with the same white makeup.
Take a light turquoise eyeshadow and blend it through your crease (i.e. shades from the Rude Cosmetics Merfantasia Book 8 palette). Next, take a darker turquoise shade and focus that on the outer corner while slightly blending it through the crease. Then, cut the crease. Add a shimmery, turquoise shade on the cut crease and a shimmery white shade in the inner corner.
Apply lashes and blend a yellow eyeshadow on your lower lash line.
With a fluffy eyeshadow brush (i.e. Sephora Collection PRO Airbrush Detail Brush #57), create a red dot on either cheek by blending red eyeshadow in a circular motion. Blend some of the same red eyeshadow on your nose to mimic a clown nose.
Create a triangle above your brow and below your lower lash line with eyeliner or black face paint.
With black eyeliner or lipstick, outline your lips and draw a line from each corner of your lip outwards to your cheeks in an upward direction. Fill in your lips with red lipstick and make sure to blend it in with the black outline.
Cat
Bring out your inner feline with makeup that is equal parts realistic and chic. As told by celebrity makeup artist Katrina D’Onofrio:
Play up the eyes by using gold and black eyeshadow and full, long, black false eyelashes.
Put foundation on your face and set it with powder.
Using your favorite bronzer (i.e. Benefit Cosmetics Hoola Matte Bronzer), start to contour your face. Make sure the cheeks have a good contour so it looks as though you have sharp cheekbones like a cat.
Using a thin paintbrush and black face paint, begin drawing small little “c”’s starting from your forehead, all the way down one side of your face, to your neck.
Take gold and silver stones and stick them in the middle of the “c” for an added touch. Then take gold glitter and fill in the sparse areas.
With your paintbrush, paint a thick, black letter “M” on the tip of your nose. Draw a line down the middle, connecting your nose down to your lips.
Finish off with black lipstick (i.e. Covergirl Katy Kat Matte Lipstick in Perry Panther) and a pair of cat ears.
Tomb Raider
Graveyard goes glam in this chilling face. As told by NYC-based makeup artist Ashtyn Thurber:
Apply a light base or concealer on any areas you would like to cover.
Take a dark brown/black/grey kohl eyeliner and smudge onto your lower and upper lash line.
With a small brush, rub a brown eyeshadow along the edge of your lash line. You can either smoke this into a wing or keep it messy-looking, depending on the effect you’re going for. (Please keep in mind your skin tone to gauge the depth of the color you use).
Using a cool-toned brown/black eyeshadow (i.e. Make Up For Ever Dust Powder - Dirt Effect), place “dirt smudges” freely on your face with a beauty sponge or your fingertips. Applying the “dirt” to the high points on your cheeks, nose, and chin is recommended. Be sure to keep it asymmetrical and organic looking. If using a beauty sponge, you can rip it to create texture so the smudging has a more organic effect. You can also mix the “dirt” pigment with body lotion and rub onto your skin for a full-body effect.
Dab a clear lip gloss (i.e. MAC Lipglass Clear) on the face using your fingers or a beauty sponge to create a sweaty effect on the skin. You can keep this on the high points of your face for more of a “beauty” look or apply to the upper lip and between the brows if you want it to look more realistic.
Using a cotton bud or toothpick, apply a scab blood gel (i.e. Ben Nye Fresh Scab) in your nostrils as well as on your brow and lip to create “cuts.”
Add a flush of pink blush in the center of your lip and blend out with your fingers as a final touch.
