Danielle Priano on Styling Strands for the Stars
Scrolling through an Instagram feed, it’s hard to ignore celebrities’ stunning red carpet looks. Their meticulous hair and makeup appear effortless from our point of view, but it takes a true genius to create such exquisite works of artistry. Danielle Priano--hairstylist to Hollywood’s hottest stars--surely fits the definition of such a mastermind. Over the past couple of years, Priano has produced a variety of A-list-worthy hairstyles for celebs such as Mariah Carey, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Hailey Baldwin, Shay Mitchell, and Victoria’s Secret angels. Considering the fact that her uncles--Thom Priano and Garren--are famous hairdressers, it’s no wonder that she inherited such talent. In between shifts, Priano took the time to answer some of my questions regarding her star-studded career. (Note: The hairstyling in all images of celebrities in this article was done by Priano.)
How did you first get into hairstyling?
Honestly, growing up, it was the only thing I was great at. That’s why I knew it was something I wanted to pursue in the long run.
How did you break through in the entertainment industry as a hairstylist?
I was fortunate enough to have grown up with my uncles already a part of the fashion industry. My uncle Timothy Priano founded one of the first hair and makeup agencies in New York City. He represented lots of legends, including my two other uncles who are hairdressers.
What’s your favorite hairstyle to do on a client?
I love a snatched ponytail. Not only does it make the client look super chic, but it also gives the appearance of a facelift.
What/who inspires you to come up with creative hairstyles to do on celebrities?
I collaborate with the client, the makeup artist, and the stylist in order to brainstorm ideas for hair. The clothing that the celebrity is wearing often inspires the glam.
As a huge fan of her songs, I have to know...what was it like working with Selena Gomez?
It was honestly like I was working with my little sister. I just adore her!
You’ve also done glam for Victoria’s Secret angels. What’s one thing readers would be surprised to hear about doing their hair?
They are legit some of the most genuine, kind, down-to-earth girls I have ever worked with. They are all just as beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside.
Do you have a favorite look you’ve ever done on a celebrity?
It was a 60s inspired look with a modern twist that I did on Selena. The pictures of her with that hairstyle really stand out, and she looked exceptionally good that night.
Is there any star that you want to work with that you haven’t done glam for yet?
Angelina Jolie. I even named my daughter after her!
What’s your number one piece of advice when it comes to hairstyling?
Treat your hair with love. It’s alive and it will only corporate if you show it love.
What’s the one hair product you can’t live without?
R+Co Foil Spray.
What has been the most exciting part of your career thus far?
Being able to travel around the world to work with different clients.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned as a hairstylist?
To always keep a positive energy and remember that it’s just hair and makeup--we are not saving lives. If you don’t like what you’re doing, then get out!
